`what is your code, sir?' the operator asked. `yes, well, this is mr baker. i have a sheet with a lot of numbers here. i new to the company. not sure which one it is.' anthrax shuffled papers on top of the pay phone, near the receiver. `how many digits is it?' `seven.' that was helpful. now to find seven digits. anthrax looked across the street at the fish and chips shop. no numbers there. then a car licence plate caught his eye. he read off the first three digits, then plucked the last four numbers from another car's plate. `thank you. putting your call through, mr baker.' a valid number! what amazing luck. anthrax milked that number for all it was worth. called party lines. called phreakers' bridges. access fed the obsession. then he gave the number to a friend in adelaide, to call overseas. but when that friend read off the code, the operator jumped in. `you're not mr baker!' huh? `yes i am. you have my code.' `you are definitely not him. i know his voice.' the friend called anthrax, who laughed his head off, then called into dialcom and changed his code! it was a funny incident. still, it reminded him how much safer it was working by himself. living in the country was hard for a hacker and anthrax became a phreaker out of necessity, not just desire. almost everything involved a long-distance call and he was always searching for ways to make calls for free. he noticed that when he called certain 008 numbers--free calls--the phone would ring a few times, click, and then pause briefly before ringing some more. eventually a company representative or answering service picked up the call. anthrax had read about diverters, devices used to forward calls automatically, in one of the many telecommunications magazines and manuals he was constantly reading. the click suggested the call was going through a diverter and he guessed that if he punched in the right tones at the right moment, he could make the call divert away from a company's customer service agent. furthermore, any line trace would end up at the company. antrax collected some 008 numbers and fiddled with them. he discovered that if he punched another number in very quickly over the top of the ringing--just after the click--he could make the line divert to where he wanted it to go. he used the 008 numbers to ring phone conferences around the world, where he hung out with other phreakers, particularly canadians such as members of the toronto-based upi or the montreal group, npc, which produced a phreakers' manual in french. the conversation on the phreaker's phone conferences, or phone bridges as they are often called, inevitably turned to planning a prank. and those canadian guys knew how to prank. I had lunch with my operations study group and my operations professor, professor nayyar, organized by the strategy and operations club. he's been with stern since 1988 and we spent the time chatting about group vs. individual projects and how we can convince him to teach my block's strategy class next semester. i attended the last of a series of job strategy groups organized by the office of career development called "how to answer tough interview questions." what do you constantly fail at? what is finance? if you were a fruit, what would you be? we went around in fish-bowl format and answered tough interview questions on-thespot. i went to a presentation on the broad residency for urban education, won the mba1 mba2 block 5 pool tournament thanks to my partner ; and had dinner with stern students that went to berkeley with me. the biggest event of the week was the graduate finance association's 10th annual conference this past friday. as a first year officer, i manned the registration table and escorted recruiters to the firm expo and reception after a day of panels. the theme for the conference was "creating value through restructuring" with keynote speakers bob hotz of houlihan lokey howard and zukin and steve zelin of the blackstone group. it was an impressive event 250 attendees, a sit-down three-course luncheon and panels with speakers from private equity, sales and trading, general finance and investment banking. every major bank in new york was represented. it was one of the few events that i got to work with all the first year and second year officers of the graduate finance association. plus, the conference was in the kimmel center which has the most beautiful views of washington square park and downtown manhattan. this weekend was the first weekend in a long time that i didn't have to go into school for an event, review session, exam or group meeting. i finally had time to catch up on new material from the second half of the semester in my classes and i realized that i will need another week to fully read everything that has been assigned! the best news all week the emerging markets association plans a study trip every spring break and members voted between china, egypt and turkey. i voted for egypt and.egypt won! november 14, 2005 this week was the busiest week yet, but still very, very exciting.i went to two big conferences in new york and california this week along with the "usual" stern events: in the never-ending quest for our professional development, the office of career development brought in outside interviewing consultants to hold behavioral mock interviews for all the firstyears. my interviewer was really great we went through my resume and the general behavioral questions for a job: tell me about your background. what is your work history? tell me about a time when you encountered an obstacle in a team setting. what do you want to do after business school? i received feedback on everything from my demeanor in the waiting room to my posture during the interview to even the speed of my answers. it was very, very helpful. next stop technical mock interviews in general finance in two weeks. i went to a microfinance training session with the united nations capital development fund organized by the nyu microfinance initiative, voted in the new york city mayoral election.
